The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) released a document on Wednesday outlining the negative feedback received for its COVID-19 and monkeypox response through an external report. The report found that public guidance had brought more confusion than clarity, and important information was released too late to adequately inform federal decisions.
CDC Director Rochelle Walenksy stated that the agency would implement changes that focus on providing quick pandemic data rather than investing in fully fledged scientific papers. “For 75 years, CDC and public health have been preparing for COVID-19, and in our big moment, our performance did not reliably meet expectations,” Director Walensky said in a briefing to CDC staff. “I want us all to do better and it starts with CDC leading the way.”
